Scott Lynch?

I know I posted a thread a while back about this guy, but the search function no longer appears to exist on the TBF, so I can't find it. Does anyone know anything about what Scott Lynch is up to, or if he's okay? He was posting his free online story back in the early fall, but after 4 chapters, that fell by the wayside and he hasn't made a post since Sept 21st or thereabouts. Then, on his Twitter feed, he said in early November that he had contracted the H1N1 virus - and complete radio silence since then. I was just curious if anyone knew if he'd gotten over that, or if there were other problems he was having. Obviously writer's block and other revision work happens to everyone - but I'm just hoping that's all that has his attention and nothing more serious is happening.

When I wrote his editor in October-ish, she said he was finishing up her final edits for the new book.

I didn't know about the H1N1 thing. That sucks. I hope he is okay too.

I'll shoot Anne an email and ask.

Both Scott and his wife are fine.

So fine, in fact, that Scott should be delivering his final edited draft of Republic to Anne on Wednesday. Smile

January 2011 is the publishing date Random House wants to go with. Very Happy

And yes, I know, that is a long time away. But I have a feeling that Random House is going to do something very special with this. It has been years since Lynch published and many people have lost interest from it. I have a feeling we are going to see a lot of effort put into marketing and publicizing the first two books of the series in September-December and then hitting everyone with a great book in January.

Now I just hope that Scott doesn't squander the opportunity and gets his ass moving on Book Four.

That's awesome news Shawn - and good detective work!! Great to hear that Scott and his wife are alright....now I can resume my anxious anticipation for this book. obviously for my own enjoyment, I hope the book is terrific, but for Scott too. it seems like he's had quite a bit of trouble with things since the last book, so hopefully this will get released with a big bang and do well for him.

I just don't want people getting pissy with Scott about the book coming out in a year's time. The book is finished and edited. Now his editor will read it again next week, make sure it is right, and then the book will go to the production team.

Looking at their schedule, I can see why Random House is pushing it in January. They have a lot of great fantasy novels coming out. Usually a house will relegate one major release a month to spread out their marketing dough. With books by Redick, Moon, Brett, Mieville, Flewelling, Novik, Brooks, Morgan, Martin, and some others I consider 'worthwhile' for marketing, they just have a far too busy schedule already to include another author with needs of a major push.

Not mad at Lynch at all, my guess is his writing needs quite a bit of editing.

that might be my favorite "unjustified anger" out there - as though he can dictate when they will release a book once he's handed it in! Laughing

It's worth noting that Gollancz have first-print rights to the series. If Bantam is holding the book until January 2011, it is likely that Gollancz will have it earlier than that, maybe October-November this year? I'll have to enquire about that.

I don't like to say 'I told you so', but, well... I told you so. The Republic of Thieves won't see release in 2010. A Spring 2011 release is now the target, 'hopefully'.

EDIT: Whoops. Time-bending typo fixed.

Aidan, what you just wrote makes no sense. haha The book won't see publication in 2011 but it will be published in Spring 2011?

Very Happy

I know the manuscript is turned in. This could simply be a publishing schedule decision. Books don't come out when they are ready; books come out when the publisher can make the most money off of them. Most authors have publishing windows and it is possible the powers that be decided the book would not do well in January and pushed it deeper into the year. There is a reason, after all, why books aren't published in January.

Plus, what Anne told me was simply conjecture. It is possible the powers that be never wanted the book in January at all anyway.

You had hard confirmation that the manuscript was turned in? I never heard anything but the rumour that its completion was 'a week away'. Then we get Anne saying we will 'hopefully' see it in Spring 2011. That doesn't sound very confident to me.

Yes, I know for a fact the manuscript was turned in. I also know for a fact that Anne finished her edits on it and returned them to Scott. I also know that Scott turned those edits in.

This has nothing to do with the book. As I wrote earlier, books aren't published in January. When Anne told me that before I thought to myself, "Why are they doing that? That doesn't make sense." This just confirms it.

By the way, this is the same woman who told me when George was at 1000 pages. And at 1100 pages. And at 1200 pages. The page counts later corroborated by George on his own blog. Anne is a straight shooter. But she is also an editor, and many of the decisions in the book world are not made my editors. Just something to keep in mind.

Ahh, well. It's nice to have some confirmation that the manuscript was turned in. I've come to be skeptical about Lynch and his deadlines, given his history. Still seems like they could have the book out for the Holiday season, if it's already into the editing process. Just seems odd to push back a big release like that.

Read my earlier posts in this thread for the timeline of Scott turning in the final edits -- and then use your mind. Smile

Even if Scott took until August 2010 to finish the final edits Anne had given him, RH could still publish the book by January. That's how you can tell this has nothing to do with the book or Scott and all to do with publishing schedules.

Books aren't published when they are finished, as I said earlier. Books are published around other book publishing schedules. 1) January is a dead month, but 2) perhaps RH has other titles they want to push in February and March that would conflict with the money spent on marketing for Lynch.

These are parts of the business that readers just don't see.

Unfortunately, they are all too real. It's the same reason why Del Rey won't publish Terry's second book in the Legends series six months after Black Staff is published. Terry has his scheduled slot of publication. To move it up six months suddenly would damage any publicity and marketing power for the other titles in that month. Make sense?

Obviously they know their business better than I do - but when it comes to this genre in particular, I would say they'd be better off staggering new books throughout the whole year. People that generally buy speculative fiction are almost just as likely to buy a new book on January 15th as they are on December 1st, I'd imagine. Give it to me the day its finished...please!!

Unfortunately, Colon, these people work with limited funds that are dispersed throughout the year. They have limited manpower as well for marketing and publicity. If they don't stagger book releases throughout the year, they can have a build up in one particular month while one month doesn't have anything.

When that happens, the authors of the books in that filled-up month lose out, because there are only so many man hours to do publicity, marketing, etc. Rather than a book getting an appropriate shove from its publisher, several books get minor nudges. That's terrible for book sales.

When it comes to January though, it is a known economic fact that people don't buy books in January. They are coming out of that holiday spending rush and tighten their belts. Books are discretionary spending. Maybe not for you and me, but for most people. That automatically makes January a losing month.

Now, this could also have something to do with Gollanz. Maybe Aidan or Wert know, but I think maybe Gollanz has first publishing rights for this series? Not sure. If they do, the push into 2011 could be on them, not RH at all.

I've sent an email to Simon Spanton of Gollancz. One of my readers mentioned that he thinks Bantam might have to wait X number of months after Gollancz has published Republic of Thieves before they can put it on shelves. Which would make the Spring 2011 date for USA make more sense.

Luckily for me, we get the Gollancz editions in Canada!

EDIT: Yeah, just noticed on Westeros that Werthead confirms that Gollancz has first rights to publish. Holiday release in UK/Canada? Spring release in USA?

There you have it then. Nothing to do with Lynch.

The question I have is: Is Scott using the time from here until next spring to write the next book?

That's the better question. If he is given a good solid head start on the next book, it might not take as long for the next book in the series to be released after Republic. By that, I mean a year or a year and a half instead of three.

I wonder what the hold up was with RoT. I know he had a rough period in his life, but surely there was more to the long gestation period than that.

Out of the three authors who are "late" in delivering manuscripts, Lynch is the one I am most worried about not loving his series. People say it is GRRM, but we don't see GRRM writing other books outside of Ice & Fire. Lynch spends time writing other material, as evidenced by chapters worth of content on his site. To me, that's spooky.

The real answer to your question though is we don't know. First books are interesting creatures. They are published and also give the writer a huge lead on writing the second book. Usually the true time it takes a writer to publish a book is the third book. Maybe this will be Lynch's normal pace. Who knows. We won't know til Book 4.
