I wonder how many book sales the UK gets from the US due to the publishing schedules...?

It's a good question. Online, it seems a lot of people are willing to order from overseas, but I expect in the grand scheme of things the number is pretty small.

I wonder what the hold up was with RoT. I know he had a rough period in his life, but surely there was more to the long gestation period than that.

My understanding is that the rough period involved Scott's day-to-day attention for a very long period (a year or more?), during which time very little work was done on the book.

In theory, now this situation is resolved, Scott's pace should likely pick up, but it depends. Writers aren't robots and sometimes family trauma can dent someone's enthusiasm for work for a long time afterwards, if not destroy it completely (as seen with Robert Howard, who committed suicide after his mother's death, or Melanie Rawn who couldn't write for ten years after her mother passed away).

I can guarantee at least one more UK sale from the US when this book gets released. Wink

interesting discussion - it's good to get a bit of the insider scoop. I'm looking forward to what Wert finds out from Simon over at Gollancz - it sounds like an UK release several months in advance of the US release is possible or even likely. It's been a while since I got books from Gollancz, so I'll have to rekindle that relationship (once the UK got a bunch of its own blogs, Simon seemed to forget about me).

Anyway, it's also my first post here - doubt I'll come buy often, but it seems a good place in particular to get Shawn's insider info. Raspberry

That's what I am here for. Wish I could show you the Sanderson Whelan cover....

.... but I can't. Very Happy

I've fired off a question to Simon about the situation. Meant to do it a while ago but life has gone unexpectedly hectic over the last month (in a good way).

I suspect after previous delays, Gollancz might not be willing to talk about it until some formal PR announcement is made. This is, along with WISE MAN'S FEAR, THE HEROES, TERMINAL WORLD and THE DARK COMMANDS, one of their higher-profile forthcoming releases.

Yeah, I sent Simon an email a few days ago. Still haven't heard back. That's what has me concerned about the release. If the manuscript is done, and not in need to heavy revisions, why isn't there more buzz from Gollancz, Bantam and Lynch?

Gollancz have confirmed the book has been delivered and is now being edited and revised for a Spring 2011 release. Gollancz and Bantam are apparently going for a simultaneous release this time around.

Good news!

It's strange that Gollancz isn't jumping on the opportunity to publish it a few months ahead of time, but either way, hopefully it gives Lynch a good head start on the fourth volume.

It must need some serious editing then. Anne told me she had already given her edit and handed it back to Scott and that he was near completing that edit. This was months ago. Perhaps he is the kind of writer that requires multiple edit passes. He is still a new writer. I know I will need multiple passes to make The Dark Thorn the best it can be; I get the feeling both publishers want that as well.

Refreshing, for a change.

As for buzz from Scott, I think he does a horrible job at publicity. Some authors are like that, the one I'm mostly thinking of is Greg Keyes. With all of the tools out there for authors to grab the horns of the bull and control their destiny, they don't do it. The announcement that Scott had turned in his book should have been up months ago. Ahh well, we all can't be Brandon Sanderson. Even GRRM does a better job of it.

Yeah, every author could learn a thing or two from Sanderson. Abercrombie does a bang up job as well.

I'm thinking, particularly with Gollancz involved, they didn't want to repeat the Rothfuss situation. Rothfuss handed in the supposedly complete book of THE WISE MAN'S FEAR over half a year ago (recalling that the whole trilogy was supposed to have been completed, at least in rough draft, circa 2006-07 before THE NAME OF THE WIND came out) and it's still not 'done' and no release date has been set, which is seriously confusing some readers.

I know I'm confused. Is Rothfuss my bitch or not? Laughing

Yes, Rothfuss is. But unlike GRRM, Pat loves being called that, sooo.... ;)

Wow, not sure if anyone else has seen this yet, but it appears life has been pretty rough for Mr. Lynch this past year, and he is struggling to get his life and writing back together.....I wish him all the best in beating this and getting his life in control.

Bummer. I had a sneaking suspicion that when we finally heard something, it would be something like this.
I wish him the best in getting a grip.

Yeah I read about that a few days ago.

I just finished his second in the Gentleman Bastard series Red Seas Under Red Skies and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I found it lacked some of the urgency and fast pace that the first book had, but the second half of RSURS was a whirlwind of fun and adventure. Highly recommend this series to anyone, cheers.
