I've never felt any strong desire to watch the Doctor, but I had a good chunk of time to kill this past weekend so I watched the first 4 episodes of the new Doctor Who. As I understand from constant nerd culture references this is the 9th doctor (Christopher Eccleston). After watching thus far I have to ask, when does it get good? I figure 4 episodes is giving any show a totally fair shot to actually have me want to watch it, but so far I don't care at all.
I don't get all the Doctor Who love. Please explain. And just because I find it amusing... ![]()

The stories are so un like anything else on TV. Its original. Simply put...its some of the best TV currently airing. I cant wait till it starts up again! ![]() |

You mean, you weren't hooked in the first ten minutes of the first episode like everyone else?

I liked Eccleston's time but didn't really get hooked until Tennant came on board. The story arcs throughout the series are good; there's lots of attention to detail, clues all over that make you think about what's going on. Also it's nice to have a show that's not just shootemup, brain-dead drivel. The Doctor and his companions succeed with their minds, nice change from the rest of the crap on TV.
EDIT: Forgot this. . Its original.
That's so refreshing. Clicking through channels anymore it's the same crap wherever you go. ![]() |

I hate all the Whos and all of there toys. I hate all of the good little girls and boy. I hate presents and ribbons and snow as it falls. But, most importantly, I hate Santa Claus.

When does it get good?
Episode 6... The first 2 parter (which I 'think' is 4 - 5) were made at the same time as episode 1 and they were a bit... well meh compared to the rest of the series. Episode 6 is epic, and look for the two episodes set in ww2 with the gas masks (9 and 10... perhaps?). Alternatively skip to either Series 2 (or 5 for the modern stuff) and enjoy Tennant or Matt Smith playing the Doctor. The new show is almost unrecognisable compared to Eccleston's tenure to be honest |

I've only been watching this show for maybe half a year. (It must have been around December, because I had exams in a few weeks.) I remember the first (half) episode I saw was the last half of Flesh and Stone, and I liked it. After the channel had finished broadcasting season 5, I lost track of when they would broadcast season 6, resulting in missing the whole season. Accidentally, I bumped into another channel that broadcast it, so I've watched the last 6 episodes of season 6.
After that, I decided to start watching from the beginning and the last episode I've watched was 'The Impossible Planet.' Episode 6 and those in WWII were indeed very good. I think Doctor Who works (for me, at least) because every single episode is something different, you never know what you're going to get. Like it was said before, it's original, it's always different. |

I for one do like Doctor Who, but it's confused me much because I haven't watched it consistently. However, even though most of the time I don't know the big story that's going on, I find that almost every episode is enjoyable all on their own.
Also, has anyone else on here heard about the BIG news concenring the Doctor? Apparently in 2013, they are going to have a special episode (an anniversary one I think) that's all about the Doctor's name. Don't know if they actually plan on revealing his name...if he has one, but supposedly it's going to be huge. I believe this was announced after comic Con.

Noooooo, blasphemy. You can't just skip the end of the Eccleston. You need to SEE the regeneration process. Plus, his ending was one of my favorites. Don't know if they actually plan on revealing his name...if he has one
He's got one. Every Gallifreyan has a real name, but they choose something else to go by. I hope they don't reveal it.

I wasn't hooked right at first either, and I never really fell in love with Eccleston Doctor (though my wife did), he did quite grow on me though. It was Dalek where I finally realized this was an amazing show and I would never stop watching it. My wife thinks the Daleks are stupid, but she loves the show. Also when Tennant comes on the scene at the end of the first episode of Series Two, I felt a bit of a fanboy swoon.
Point being, it gets better.

There is something I've noticed about The Dotor. He seems to get younger with each new regeneration. aso heard matt smith is leaving after seventh series. i wonder who they could get to be the doctor next. would be funny if it was omeone like Daniel Radcliffe or something. But you gotta figure that aging backwards thing has gotta figure into the show eventually

Yeah, I was having drinks with someone who used to work there when Tennant was the Dr and... a few people were surprised they picked someone so young.

Not true. Found a list of their ages when they debuted as the Doctor: 1. William Hartnell - 55 2. Patrick Troughton - 46 3. Jon Pertwee - 50 4. Tom Baker - 40 5. Peter Davison - 29 6. Colin Baker - 40 7. Sylvester McCoy - 44 8. Paul McGann - 36 9. Chris Eccleston - 41 10. David Tennant - 34 11. Matt Smith - 27 Also, if they choose someone who is already famous to play the Doctor, the show is going to go into the crapper. They need someone who hasn't done much before. Someone who can make his name BY playing the Doctor. Personally, I'd love them to choose someone older again. Would bring a good change to the whole "catering to the youthful audience" crap that Hollywood does, needing a "hot, young star" in everything.

I don't think the alien body would be possible because Time Lords actually do have a set physiology. Humanoid, two hearts, etc. As for changing into a female, I also don't think it's possible because the Time Lords also have set genders. Romana was a female. The Doctor is male. There's never been any mention of anything like that before and they've gone too deep with specifics on Time Lords as a whole that they can't screw with it now.

... I don't want to come across as an obsessive here...
But yes, In Neil Gaiman's episode in the last series, the Doctor makes specific reference to a Timelord who switched genders. He's also stated in the past he could regenerate into an entirely different creature 'I might have no head' was said in jest but he seemed to be making the point there was a chance he might not be human any more. In the old series Romana regenerated into several forms in a short space of time, whilst most were generically human female there was a large ammount of alteration. Still, I do agree that they shouldn't do a 'Doctor becomes female' lightly. It's the kind of thing that has the potential to spill out of control and the hype would overspill the episode. It just sounds... like the kind of thing they'd do for comedy (as they have in the past in spinoff media (Curse of Fatal Death charity story (penned by current showrunner Stephen Moffat), and Big Finish's unbound 'Exile' (penned by voice of Daleks Nic Briggs). So, whilst Its theoretically possible... No, I just... hope they don't. There's other, better stories that need telling first |

I know there's the other Who thread, but that's a spoilerific zone of the most current season so I'm staying here.
Well, in the month and a half since I started I've watched through the first 3 of the new seasons (Eccleston's and two of Tennant's). I feel bad for Christopher Eccleston, he only got one season as the Doctor and the whole first half of that had a school video club production quality. I understand they were trying to restart a show and needed to get people hooked, so from a story-telling standpoint I get the reason they offed him, but I find it a shame. Having watched two whole seasons (just finished Martha's time as companion) of David Tennant I must say I prefer Eccleston as the Doctor, even if only half of his episodes were actually good ones. The WW2 episodes (and Captain Jack) were great, you guys were right. Tennant as the Doctor is kind of fun, but I can't shake the feeling that he's a guy acting like he's trying to be the Doctor rather than just being the Doctor. Especially when he gets all fighty and tries to pull of the rage of the Timelords. The stuff the show has him do is great, but he's very hit or miss on actually pulling of a believably scary Doctor. When he does get it right, he's excellent but Eccleston had it in spades. I guess I just prefer a Doctor who is enthusiastic and adventurous, but you can tell will absolutely wreck your s*** if you deserve it. Plus, Eccleston showed a better acting range right from the start. If 9 had had the maturity of scripts and production that the show later gained I can see him having been the modern favorite. Plus, there are companions who get more episodes than he got. That's just sad. On the plus side for 10, Tennant is more fun and amusing during the future-sciency semi-explanations. Also, having gone through Rose and Martha's stories (plus the one with Donna that was very amusing) I have to admit I actually prefer Martha. A lot. Much of that comes from the fact that Rose was somewhat irritating, but Martha was also smarter and more capable.

I also like the first doctor. Well they are all great in their own ways. But it also took some time to get me hook. I also got hooked after the Dalek Episode

I was actually expecting Grimmy to have a heart attack and then come in for the correction.

Alright alright the first of the new doctors which would be the ninth. I also have watched some of the really old episodes and also of the really first doctor and it was great. I like those old shows so my comment wasn't completly wrong

Don't worry, I haven't seen any of the old series. I just know that Grimpond always goes on about how the older ones are better than the new ones so I figure he'd jump at the chance to correct the first Doctor thing.
