Hi All,
I'm just curious what you all enjoy about this series. I like it because it s light-hearted fantasy with some amusing moments. I also really enjoy the colorful imagination that goes into it and the various Landover creations (Nightshade, Strabo, Blue Bonnies, Landsview, Sterling Silver, kobolds, etc.). Shawn

The light-heartedness is contagious and I have always been attracted to fantasy that involves someone from this world somehow being hurled into a magical world.

I will also go with the lighthearted tone of the books. I try to switch up my reading between heavy themed series like the Shannara books and going into another series, (especially if I am switching between fantasy and sci-fi). To me it is akin to cleansing the mental pallet before I take on another more serious series.
One should always try to keep a little light material in the mix. Piers Anthonys (Xanth), Alan Dean Foster, Spider Robinson, Terry Pratchett are also great stuff. |

I like the light-heartedness of it. Even though people are in danger all the time, it doesn't have that dark, fearful, "good guys are going to die" sense all the time. I like that too, but this just gives a different sort of "color" to the writing. Sometimes it helps to have a little more comic relief in a story.
I also like the direct link to today's real world, which is a somewhat common theme in a lot of Terry's writing. I always liked the idea that it wasn't all imaginary.

I like the title on the first book^^
and as previously stated light-hearted writing, its not always entertaining reading about deep despair, betrayals, brutal fighting etc. And well the characters certainly are alot different from the World of Shannara, a talking dog, Wizard who got near to no skills, Fillip and Sot and so the list goes on. Its from time to time like an all out comedy~^~ I gotta read the books sometime again^^ ![]() |

I just find it to be a great mix of action, humour, and fantasy. Where else will you read about a Wizard who screws up every spell, a lawyer becoming a King and taking on a hot forest creature for a wife, a scribe who's half-dog, and a cynical dragon that has one of the most nonchalant personalities around?
And of course...the Paladin is just sheer awesome ![]() Team Emo: We like to Cry ='{ Proud member of the Morgan Leah Fan Club: LEAH!! LEAH!! BEWARE: I WILL HUG YOU!! =D Cinina: Revolution The Birth of a New Order... ...Will mark the Death of the World... |

Hah… Strabo… yeah, I must admit, he's said some things that made me laugh.

Just typing in to let you all know I am not deceased. ANd this seemed like a good place to post. I like Landover because it captures well a sense of Wonder, better, I thin, than the more rigidly situated Shannarah novels. Also the characters are highly engaging, humourous, and sometimes rather complex. I have an enduring fondness for Questor, Strabo, Nightshade and Edgewood Dirk, in a way that is more personal than anything I ever had for the Shannarah characters, even Allanon, Cogline and Wlaker Boh, all of whom I was quite fond of.

Just... I don't really know.
I picked up a random book from my English teacher's bookshelf in 9th grade and opened it to a random part and started reading. And then I stole the book and finished it. Of course, that book was "Magic Kingdom for Sale - Sold!" And I dunno why I liked it. I began reading at the part when Ben first meets Strabo face-to-face, learns he can talk, Io Dust, and all that. And I stopped around the beginning of the chapter after that one. At first, I thought, "Gee, this is cliche. Dragons and all." But it really wasn't, and it was really good! So now I'm hooked, and I don't even like fantacy. Plus, Fillip and Sot are really funny. They add that extra "spark" to the series.

I love it that no one has said, "I like Landover because of Ben Holiday trying to put his life back together again." haha I guess all of those who said they were upset about the possible addition of the children should reexamine why the movie will work for them since the main component of why they love it will not be changed.
Amusing. Shawn

I can't believe I havn't answered this thread
Okay, to me, the Landover series is not only a great read, but a collection that all the family can enjoy reading. I love the way the story leads into Ben Holiday's private thoughts of his late wife, and how he misses her. That part, at least, reached deep into my heart. And as the story rolled on though the other books, I allowed my imagination to run wild with every detail Terry put into them. I am a lover of fantasy, and what Terry has done in The Landover series is enhance my thoughts into writing as well. So thank you Terry Brooks. Suzanna

Sounds good to me. Let's hope the covers depict better scenes, too.

i have just finished the first landover book. i have read all the shannara novels but for some reason landover did not appeal to me until now, but i must say i am sorry i waited so long to read this tremendous story.
the reason i enjoyed it was because it seems to be a real throwback to the old type of fantasy stories, but with more adult but lighthearted way. the characters in this story are for some reason more appealing then many in the shannara series, although i didnt feel as concerned for them in their parts of danger as i knew nothing would go wrong, hey maybe thats all part of the reason i enjoyed this story so much! |

Indeed. Better covers would be very interesting... perhaps even covers that are consistant with one another.

Would you believe me if I told you I see a similarity between Magic Kingdom for Sale: Sold!, and the films City Slickers and City Slickers: The Legend of Curly's Gold? Both seemed to me, to deal with the Midlife Crisis. Both, involved the main character trying something new, to start again in life, to renew the joy of life (in effect, to put the life, back into life.) Both, involved something esoteric, wondrous, and brought delight, joy, enlightenment, and growth to the main characters. Both brought, after appropriately hard struggles, a well deserved triumph to the main characters. A triumph that would last not just for a moment, but for the rest of their lives. In the case of Ben Holiday, it also brought love, and a way for him to overcome the horror and dark legacy of his wife's death. Then you can add in a *lot* of really fascinating side characters, such as Abernathy, Strabo, the Prism Cat, and many others. If only Shannara had these beings! Such as Strabo to the Ilse Witch: 'Hi Grianne. No, you can't ride on my back so you can fight the Morgawr. You humans always take yourselves so seriously, thinking you are the beginning and the end. It never ceases to amuse, and to amaze, this old dragon.' |

Dayel, there are plenty of movies and books that deals with Midlife Crisis, the main character trying something new, involving something esoteric and an appropriately hard struggle followed by a well deserved triumph to the main characters.
Dead wife, kids, parent, parrots and beloved friends are very common in movies and books. It is not something that only Magic Kingdom for Sale: Sold! and City Slickers and City Slickers: The Legend of Curly's Gold got, its a fairly well used concept you know-_- So Would you believe me if I told you I see a similarities between Magic Kingdom for Sale: Sold! and a whole bunch of movies?~~ ![]() |

I really do not understand this, I won't dispute the set-up is very similar but Magic Kingdon is MAGIC. With a whole cast of far more interesting characters than any of those other movies. I loved Magic Kingdom for Sale and detested City Slickers. I know one is a book and the other is a movie but still......
Ya know, sometimes I think people over-analyze things.
